SOUTH PORTLAND – Next week, the Portland Water District will begin a project to replace approximately 1,550 feet of 12-inch water main on Broadway in South Portland between Dawson Street and Hobart Street. Work will occur between 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and is expected to be complete by mid-July.

During work hours, traffic on Broadway between Westbrook Street and Main Street will be limited to one-way in an easterly direction (inbound). Outbound traffic will be detoured south on Main Street to Westbrook Street. During non-working hours, normal two-way traffic will be permitted. Local businesses, side streets and driveways in the construction area will remain accessible during the construction.

The water main being replaced dates back to 1892. The project has been coordinated in advance of proposed sidewalk reconstruction by the city of South Portland and paving by the Maine Department of Transportation.
