ALASKAN AUTHOR Hank Lentfer will discuss his memoir, “Faith of Cranes,” and conservation work April 11 at Bowdoin College and Frontier Café, in Brunswick.
On April 11, a discussion will take place at 4 p.m. at Bowdoin College hosted by the Environmental Studies Program in the Beam Classroom in the Visual Arts Center, and an evening presentation and book reading will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Frontier Café, 14 Maine St., Fort Andross.
Using images and sounds gathered from a life embedded on Alaska’s wild edge, Lentfer will explore the role of beauty and wonder to inspire the work of conservation, a news release said.
Lentfer’s memoir chronicles a life deeply attached to America’s wildest land, and yet threatened by the same industrial and global forces we contend with in Maine. “Faith of Cranes” depicts Lentfer’s passion for Alaska, his misgivings about the changes he imposes on the landscape, and how he learns from the migration of an ancient bird to have hope for the world he is teaching his child to love. Lentfer explains that as he has watched industry and urbanization consume the wilderness around him, he has struggled to keep his despair in check, and has learned to balance love of place, loss of hope, and motivation to incite change.
Both events are free and open to the public ($2 suggested donation at Frontier event).
