BIDDEFORD — Police are investigating the shooting death of a man whose body was found inside a car early this morning, according to Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.
The shooting was reported at about 12:45 a.m. It took place in the parking lot of the Parish Place apartment complex off Birch Street, in the downtown area behind St. James School.
The identity of the victim was not released, and no further details were available at press time this morning.
St. James School was open as scheduled, and police were directing school staff to their parking lot this morning.
Deputy Police Chief Joanne Fisk confirmed this morning that the apartment complex is operated by the Biddeford Housing Authority.
Guy Gagnon, executive director of the BHA, said he was told neither the victim nor the shooter were residents, nor had any other connection to the 48-unit building at 41 Birch St.
The parking lot where the shooting occurred “was just some random space” for those involved, he said. The building, which contains market-rate units, was acquired just last week by the housing authority. The building was built in 1888 and converted into apartments in the mid-1980s.
According to McCausland, more details were expected to be released later Tuesday.
