LYMAN — With Easter arriving at the end of the week, about 50 area children got an early start Saturday as they searched through the stacks at Lyman Community Library for Easter eggs.
Library board members and Librarian Ken Scott figure the egg hunt has been taking place for about 10 years.
Youngsters got the chance to hunt for 859 brightly colored, candy-filled eggs hidden among the library stacks. Board members worked for three hours the previous night to fill them.
Children from 2 to 5 years old got to pick 10 eggs apiece, while older youngsters could have 20; the number of eggs they’re allowed to pick depends on how many children participate. They learn a lesson in sharing and making sure there’s enough for everyone, said library board member Sandra Caron, one of the many board members involved in the egg hunt.
Inside the brightly colored plastic eggs were M & Ms, Hershey’s Kisses, peanut butter cups ”“ and of course, jelly beans.
Before the hunt, most of the children sat in a circle and waited for a special guest to appear.
They stomped their feet and chanted “Easter bunny, Easter bunny,” until the fellow appeared and proceeded to pass a treat to everyone, one by one.
After they gathered the eggs, they sat and emptied their loot into bags, leaving the plastic eggs for next year.
Later, the children paused to sit on the Easter bunny’s knee, and Mom and Dad or grandparents snapped photos.
An Easter basket raffle and snacks were also part of the event.
Parents acknowledged the likelihood of a sugar overload, while grandparents had a great time as they watched the little ones antics.
“Having fun?” one grandparent was asked.
“Oh, yes,” she said, her face wreathed in a smile, as her little granddaughter plunked an egg into a brown paper bag trimmed with paper bunny ears and then proceeded to look for more.
