FREEPORT — This coming weekend, students from 16 high schools will be competing for the State Championship of the 82nd annual Maine Drama Festival.
On March 8-9, at nine regional competitions across the State, 72 schools presented plays ranging from the classics to original studentwritten plays. At each of the regional competitions, a panel of three judges chose top performances that received the right to compete in the State Finals this weekend.
The Class A finals will be held at Camden Hills Regional High School and Class B will be held at Freeport High School. The outstanding performance at each State Final will be nominated by the judges to participate in the New England Drama Festival, April 17 through 19 in Woonsocket, R.I.
The following schools will compete in the Class A State Finals at Camden Hills Regional High School:
— Friday 6 p.m.: Thornton Academy, Belfast Area High School with “The Greek Mythology of Olympiaganza,” and Morse High School with “STR8-2VID3O,” a studen written play by senior Sophie Mayo.
— Saturday, noon: Bangor High School with “Hush Little Celia,” Fryeburg Academy with “Private Live” and Westbrook High School with “Zen Substitute.”
— Saturday, 5:30 p.m.: Skowhegan High School with “Uncle Vanya,” Falmouth High School with “39 Steps” and Oceanside High School with “Twelfth Night.”
Freeport High School will host Class B State finals with the following schools participating:
— Friday 6 p.m.: Greater Portland Christian School with “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon,” Hermon High School with “The Complete History of America (abridged)” and Mount Desert Island High School with “Interview: A Fugue for Eight Actors.”
— Saturday 11 a.m.: Waynflete with “Twelfth Night,” Lincoln Academy with “Silk Cove,” Catherine McAuley High School with “The Sparrow” and Madison High School with “Conflict.”
— Saturday 6:45 p.m.: Yarmouth High School with “The Secret in the Wings” and Fort Kent High School with “Prelude to a Kiss.”
Tickets are $8 adults/$5 students per session and are available at the door. All proceeds benefit the Maine Principals’ Association.
