PORTLAND — Bartenders may have started pouring green beer at 6 a.m. Sunday, but Portland police said the alcohol did not appear to be affecting the behavior of visitors to the city’s Old Port district on St. Patrick’s Day.

“There are big crowds in the Old Port and the bars are doing a booming business,” Portland Police Lt. Gary Hutcheson said Sunday afternoon.

Police beefed up foot patrols in the Old Port in case of unruly behavior, but Hutcheson said officers had not made any arrests and that as far as he could tell, everyone seemed to be having a good time.
