She attended schools in Beverly, MA until the age of 8 when her family moved to Freeport, ME. Her parents purchased the Roseland Cabins which they owned and operated for 48 years. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1939.
Shirley retired from L.L. Bean. During retirement she enjoyed driving, knitting, and working in her flower gardens when not spending time with her beloved family. In later years, her good friend and companion, Leon Cushing moved in with her until he died in 2001.
She is survived by three children: a son Stephen Durgin and his wife Blanche Brentzel-Durgin of Oak Hill, FL, daughter, Diane Briggs and her husband, George of Freeport, ME, and a daughter, Rosanne Durgin and her companion,Frank Vonasek, of Pownal, ME. She always said, “Thank God for my children.” Grandchilden are Scott and Laurie Durgin, Gary and Karie Durgin, Greg Coffin, Tom and Amy Coffin, Robert Coffin and Lisa Randall, great grandchildren Brandon Durgin, Noah Coffin, Delaney Durgin, Dominique Durgin, Chelsea Durgin and Jordan Randall. Step grandchildren Holly Anderson and Michael Briggs and step great grandchildren Trent and Sydney Anderson. She also leaves a dear friend Judy Puiia and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Loren and Merton (Bud) Fillmore.
Life Celebration will be held in Freeport, ME on July 20th, 2013.
