Charlie was born in Bridgton, the son of Wallace and Villa Douglas. He was raised and attended schools in the Harpswell and Brunswick area. Charlie began his career in the transportation industry in the mid 1960’s working for Sam Prawer and then for Bisson Moving & Storage where he worked for over forty years retiring as Vice President of Operations in 2007.
On New Year’s Eve 1983, he met his soul mate, Sugar. They made a home together in Bath where they raised their grandchild, D.J. Holbrook. Their home was a place where two families became one and was always the place for family celebrations.
Charlie was well known for his quick wit and snappy come backs. He is credited for many popular sayings such as “You don’t know what you’re missing unless you ship by Bisson” or “If I was doing any better, you’d have to help me enjoy it.” He was a family man who was very proud of his children and grandchildren and all that they brought to his life. In his retirement, Charlie loved going for a daily drive. You could count on him patrolling the streets of Bath keeping up on the latest happenings in the city. And without a doubt, if you frequented the Brunswick Wal-Mart, you were likely to see him sitting in the parking lot waiting for Sugar to finish her “inventory.” He was predeceased by his siblings Cora, Wendell, John, and Everett and grandson Seth O’Brien.
Still here and loving him are his fiancé of thirty years, Sugar; a son, Scott Douglas (and wife, Judy), a daughter, Tami Hamilton (and husband, Brent); a grandson (who was like a son) D.J. Holbrook; Sugar’s children Scott Madore, Lorie Madore, and Eric Madore; grandchildren Andrew, Austin, Matthew, Connor, Tyler, Dylan, Cody, Erica and Todd; great-grandchildren Jonah, Joel, and Ava; sisters Jerraldine Douglass and Betty Dean Toothaker; his ex-wife, Myrt Collins, and; many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 28th, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00pm at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 1st, at 11:00am at the funeral home. A reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus in Bath.
