WESTBROOK – Richard Wagner said despite what it might look like, his Mr. Bagel franchise on Main Street will not be serving beer with breakfast.

Wagner will be in front of the Westbrook City Council on March 4 to upgrade his Food Service Establishment License to include the sale of wine and malt beverages – beer and products like Smirnoff Ice and Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

Wagner said the intent of the license was not to encourage drinking in the morning, but to bring in more patrons to Mr. Bagel’s catering and event business.

“It’s just something nice to have,” said Wagner about the license. “Having that, I think I’ll get more functions.”

Wagner said he hosts about four functions a year, but hopes the expanded license will bring in more business.

Alcoholic beverages will not be served during the restaurant’s regular business hours.

“It’s only for specific functions held at the restaurant after hours,” Wagner said.

Along with hosting functions, Mr. Bagel offers a lunch and breakfast catering menu that includes a bagel and cream cheese platter for $1.99 per person and a finger sandwich platter for $24.99 for 24 sandwiches.

City Administrator Jerre Bryant said the license could strengthen the business.

“It’s a great business for the downtown, it’s in a super location and it seems to be a reasonable use,” Bryant said.
