BATH — Reveal your inner botanist as the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust offers a free Winter Tree Identification walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Thorne Head Preserve in celebration of Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.

How do you identify a tree if it has no leaves? With a little experience you can learn to use the clues of twigs, branch structure, and bark to figure out the trees of the forest, even without characteristic foliage.

Participants will learn to recognize these hints and master a simple dichotomous key — a common identification tool used by experienced botanists.

KELT staff member Chris Cabot will lead participants and share the knowledge he gained through years of walking in the woods of New England.

Dress with warm outerwear and footwear; snowshoes are encouraged if conditions are appropriate. In the event of bad weather and poor driving conditions, the event will be rescheduled.

To get to Thorne Head Preserve from downtown Bath, go north on High Street which dead ends into the parking lot of the preserve.

The program is free; reservations are encouraged; all ages are welcome. Contact Becky Kolak 442-8400 or email bkolak@kennebecestuary.org.
