BANGOR — The Winslow High School boys basketball team rallied, but it couldn’t overcome a poor start, and Mt. Desert Island took a 48-42 win in the Eastern B quarterfinals.

No. 3 MDI (16-3) will face the winner of this morning’s game between No. 2 Presque Isle and No. 7 Waterville in the semifinals on Wednesday. No. 6 Winslow ends the season at 14-6.

Mt. Desert Island led by as many as 13 points in the first half, before the Black Raiders began to chip away. When Justin Martin hit a  3-pointer with 4:15 left in the third quarter, it gave the Black Raiders a 25-24 lead, their first lead since a 4-0 cushion in the opening minutes.

Jon Phelps (16 points) made a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the third to give the Trojans a 33-32 lead going into the fourth quarter. Nason Lanphier made a free throw with 6:23 to play to give the Black Raiders a 35-33 lead.

The Trojans took the lead back for good with 4:43 left in the game on a Phelps basket. Austin Ireland made a foul shot to get Winslow to within two points, 42-40, with 2:45 to play, but the Trojans, who had struggled at the line throughout the game, started to make free throws.

MDI was just 9 for 20 at the line, but in the fourth quarter, the Trojans made 7 of 11 foul shots. Keegan McKim made four free throws in the final two minutes, while Phelps sank a pair.

The Black Raiders struggled to find their shooting touch in the first half, and that helped the Trojans open a 13-point lead. A  McKim basket gave MDI a 21-8 lead with 2:38 to play in the second quarter.

Winslow’s offense started to come to life late in the first half. The Black Raiders closed the second quarter with a 9-0 run. Fouled while taking a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, Trevor Lovely hit all three free throws to cut Winslow’s halftime deficit to four points, 21-17.

Trevor Lovely led Winslow with 17 points, while Martin scored 10, all in the third quarter. Austin Ireland grabbed 11 rebounds for the Black Raiders.
