The Maine Red Claws will field perhaps their strongest roster tonight when they begin the first of five consecutive road games, playing the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in McAllen, Texas.
Maine not only officially completed the trade for All-Star forward James Mays from Springfield, the Red Claws also activated All-Star forward DaJuan Summers from the injured list.
Summers had been out with a strained hamstring, but was cleared to play Tuesday. To make room for Summers on the roster, the Red Claws waived 7-foot backup center Scott VanderMeer.
VanderMeer had played 27 games, starting 11 and averaging 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds a game.
Mays was acquired in a trade over the weekend, sending Kris Joseph to Springfield. Mays was averaging 16.4 points and 10.6 rebounds and was named to the D-League All-Star Game next week.
He will join four Red Claws also invited to the game — Summers, forward Chris Wright, guard/forward Micah Downs and guard Shelvin Mack.
Wright, 6-8, was named the D-League’s Performer of the Week for his three-game effort averaging 26.3 points (66 percent shooting) and 14.3 rebounds.
After Rio Grande Valley Tuesday, the Red Claws play the Austin Toros on Wednesday.
