Lauren Bryant, of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth High School, a senior at Husson University in Bangor, posted a 4.0 grade point average for the fall 2012 semester. A double major in psychology and criminal justice, she has a cumulative grade point average of 3.9. Her younger sister, Shelby Bryant, (of South Portland and Catherine McAuley High School), a freshman at University of Maine Farmington, also earned a 4.0 grade point average for the fall 2012 semester. Shelby is majoring in public health education.
Saint Michael’s College student Emma Kast, daughter of Ellen Kast of Cape Elizabeth, is studying abroad in Atenas, Costa Rica at SFS, Sustainable Development Studies for the spring 2013 semester. Kast, a junior environmental studies major, graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School before coming to Saint Michael’s in Burlington, Vt.
Girl Scout signup in Scarborough
Girl Scouts of Maine will be hosting parent information and registration meetings in Scarborough on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m., at First Congregational Church, 167 Black Point Road.
Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different and fun ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting and how the programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best. Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Sample to perform in South Portland
Maine humorist Tim Sample will perform Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the South Portland Community Center.
Sample, born in Aroostook County and raised in Boothbay Harbor, recorded his first comedy album in 1979, and he has since recorded three dozen CDs, videos, DVDs and books of Down East humor.

More than 200 student voices melodically echoed in the Mahoney Middle School Auditorium in South Portland during an evening of entertainment and excellence on Jan. 8. Under the direction of Beverly Hosic and Jamie Swenson, the choruses from South Portland High School and Mahoney and Memorial middle schools sang songs featuring student choreography, finger cymbals, marimba, and lively percussion. The evening ended with the entire high school and middle school choruses convening on the stage to a rousing rendition of “Break, Break, Break” by Ruth Morris Gray, which brought the crowd to a rousing and supportive applause.
