PORTLAND – A Casco man once acquitted of murder, only to be arrested again this year in a Cumberland County drug sweep, pleaded guilty Wednesday in the drug case in Cumberland County Unified Criminal Court.
Agostino J. “AJ” Samson, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful trafficking of a Class B drug, oxocodone, and one count of unlawful trafficking in a Class B drug, cocaine. Two counts of aggravated trafficking of a Class A drug, heroin, were dismissed.
Samson, not to be confused with his father Agostino P. Samson, was sentenced to a four-year prison term with all but 13 months suspended, followed by two years of probation. If he is found to be in violation of the terms of his probation, the balance of his prison sentence could be imposed.
Samson was one of a half-dozen suspects charged in a Lakes Region sweep by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency after a year-long investigation into a network of illegal dealing of heroin, cocaine and prescription painkillers.
In March 2009, Samson was charged with murder after the body of Scott Libby, a 25-year-old landscaper, was found inside his car, which had been driven onto railroad tracks off Barker Road in Bethel and struck by a train.
Samson was found not guilty of Libby’s murder after a jury trial in Oxford County Superior Court.
