Every semester I do a letter to the editor lesson with my English Language Learning class. It is my opportunity to teach writing as well as the value of using your voice to express opinion. This semester I have another fabulous group of students who are learning how to express their ideas, give their viewpoints and experience freedom of the press. Enjoy their letters. Thanks for reading.

Obama ?is our future

Have you ever wondered how our lifestyle will be five years from now? Do you have any notions to change what the world offers us today? I know this letter will make the difference.

I am a student working towards his criminology degree and I have a problem with our current economy. People lose their homes because of our economic failures. Our gas and oil shortages are having a huge burden on the citizens of the United States. The election between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney clears way for candidacy. Everyone who has seen and read the articles and news reports on how Mitt Romney plans the way to solve the economic problem knows that it is simply not logical. Barack Obama has earned a second term as the United States president. Obama will continue to help us with our healthcare issues and to make plans to have America a debt free country. I am pleased that this country saw the road to re-election.

Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something. Support President Obama for he is our future.

Diverse culture is valuable

Portland has become a multicultural city in the past 10 years. People all over the city might have the type of reactions when they visit or live in a different culture. First of all, when I came to Portland, it was just as nice as now, but there weren’t multicultural people then. Now I can find things that I like about my culture like foods, clothes, events, and even enough people to talk to in my own language.

Secondly, the benefits we received when people come from different culture comes into my mind. We share a group of interacting and create rules for behavior in almost any situation. Likewise we can see the importance of culture and pass it on. The most important thing in a multicultural city is to respect one another equally.

Finally, learning about other people’s culture doesn’t mean that you have to lose your own. The multicultural actually teaches you the beliefs and values of people. Many people came to Portland and are bewildered by the American culture. Now the city is more multicultural than ever. We encourage all kinds of people to experience the multiculture in Portland, because we are all the same. We have all kind of things from foods, clothes, dance, and community events. The multiculture is the value of who we are and you should experience it.

Education is top opportunity

Education is very important in our life. Education teaches us how to think in the right way and how to work properly to make good decisions. In our life it is easy for us not think about people in different countries who don’t have education. I say this because I know some people who are trying very hard to learn so they can have all the tools and skills needed to be successful in life, but they don’t have the opportunity to do so.There are people have the opportunity to go to schools and achieve their goals without any issue.

I believe we have the chance to better our education. I advise everyone who wants to be intelligent and have knowledge about everything around the world to find a way to educate themselves by start it today.
