Thanksgiving service
The annual community Thanksgiving service, sponsored by the churches of Freeport, is on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Community of Christ, 49 Park St., Freeport. The guest preacher will be the Rev. Peter Heinrichs, pastor of the First Congregational Church. The public will have an opportunity during the service to speak words of thanksgiving. Refreshments will follow.
People are asked to donate canned or non-perishable food the Freeport Community Services Food Bank or cash for the Freeport Community Services Fuel Fund. For more information, contact the Rev. Sandy Williams at 865-4404.
Free Thanksgiving feast
A free Thanksgiving dinner will be served to family, friends and neighbors at the Freeport Community Center on Thursday, Nov. 22, from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Dinner is hosted by Jonas and Kate Werner of Azure Cafe? and cooked by executive chef Christopher Bassett. The public is invited for a whole meal or a cup of coffee and homemade pie. Hot, boxed dinners are available for those in need.

Women’s Club meeting
The Freeport Women’s Club will meet on Friday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Freeport Community Library. Dr. Fred Cichoki, science professor at Senior College, University of Maine, will present a program, “Energy, Ecology and the Environment, and What You Should Know Before it’s Too Late.”
Refreshments will follow the program and all are welcome.
Firewood fundraiser ?to benefit epilepsy
Doherty’s North Freeport General Store is selling tickets for a firewood raffle in honor of Alexandra Daniel, a Freeport teenager with epilepsy. Daniel, 17, was diagnosed at the age of 9, and is on a large dose of medications to control her seizures. Each year, her family raises money for the Epilepsy Foundation, and this is the second year the family has raffled off firewood to help aid their efforts. The raffle prize is one cord of firewood delivered to the winner’s home. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
The firewood will be on display at the North Freeport General Store until the drawing on Nov. 23. Tickets are available at the store, or by calling Becky and James Daniel at 865-0645.
General assistance rules topic of hearing
The town of Freeport has scheduled a public hearing regarding proposed amendments to the general assistance ordinance concerning maximum levels of housing assistance. The hearing is Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Merriconeag Waldorf School, 57 Desert Road, Freeport.
Information can be obtained at the town clerk’s office, the town manager’s office, the Freeport Community Library and the town’s website.
Freeport Lioness-Lions fair, lunch Saturday
The Freeport Lioness-Lions Club is hosting its 15th-annual craft fair and “fish chowdah and chili luncheon” on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Harraseeket Grange Hall on Elm Street in Freeport.
The lunch runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with homemade fish chowder, chili, steamed hot dogs, homemade pies, soda and water.
The craft fair features fresh balsam wreaths, jewelry, hand knit items, homemade cards and ornaments, stained glass and photography. Free coffee is available for shoppers. There will be a raffle with many items donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting any Freeport Lioness-Lion Club member and ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Library news and notes
The Freeport Community Library will be featuring the photography of Eric Johnsen, a self-taught landscape photographer and camera collector. The “Reflections of Nature” exhibit is a culmination of over seven years of his work. The exhibit will run through November.
A seminar, “Tech Talk: Reap the online benefits of having a Portland Public Library card,” is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14. at 6:30 p.m. All Cumberland County residents age 5 and older are eligible for a free Portland Public Library card and its online benefits. This seminar will feature some of the Portland library’s online resources such as HeritageQuest for genealogy, classical music and video, Mango Languages for learning a variety of languages, TumbleBooks and Bookflix for children and more.
The U.S. Air Force Colonial Brass gives a free concert on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. at the library. The ensemble of six professional musicians from the U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty will be playing a variety of music from classics to pop and Broadway to swing in the Community Meeting Room. Seating will be limited. Audiences are advised to arrive early.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, the library will present “Miss Lisa’s Songs and Stories” from 10 – 11 a.m. in the Children’s Room.
Sammie Haynes, an award-winning children’s musician will perform on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. Her latest CD, “Nature’s ABC’s” on the Gentle Wind label, has received four awards, including a Parent’s Choice.
Maine author Monica Wood will do a reading on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room. She is the critically acclaimed author of “When We Were the Kennedys,” which is her newest book, as well as “Ernie’s Ark” and “Any Bitter Thing.”
Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
