PORTLAND — M. Suzanne MacArthur, 92, died on November 3, 2012, at the Cedars in Portland.
The daughter of H. Charles Milholland and Mary Elizabeth (Jones) Milholland, she was born June 17, 1920, in New York City. She grew up in Douglaston, N.Y., attending schools there and in Port Washington, N.Y. She graduated from Middlebury College in 1941 and the following year from Katherine Gibbs in New York City. She worked at Stoneleigh Jr. College; in the personnel department at Rockefeller Center; and as secretary to the president of Bard College. In 1947 she married Kenneth C. MacArthur, Jr.
She taught elementary school at the Wyoming Seminary Day School in Forty Fort, Pa., and at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y. She retired in 1977 and lived in South Harpswell, Me., until 2003. During that time she did volunteer work at the Curtis Memorial Library and in the special collections section of the Bowdoin College library. She was a member of the King’s Daughters. For many years she summered in Chance Harbour, New Brunswick. In 2003 she moved to South Portland and subsequently to Portland.
Her husband predeceased her in 2000. She is survived by two sons, Charles M. MacArthur and his wife, Lisa Tapert, and Kenneth C. MacArthur III and his wife, Susanne. Also surviving are two grandsons, Scott C. Snow, and W. Cory Snow and his wife, Sheila Sullivan, as well as the two great-grandchildren who lit up her life, Finn Sullivan Snow and Molly Sullivan Snow.
The whole family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of the Cedars Liebowitz Wing for taking such good care of Sue for the last several months. At the request of the deceased there will be no service.
