A University of Southern Maine student has been charged with setting three fires inside his Gorham dormitory building early Monday.

According to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, Jordan D. Maroon, 20, of Winslow, was arrested about 1:30 p.m. Monday and charged with three counts of arson. Maroon, a junior, is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

Maroon remained in jail Wednesday and bail has been set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 property.

The Fire Marshal’s Office and university police began investigating the fires after they were reported on the Gorham campus about 4:30 a.m. The fires were set in a first floor trash can near the main entrance of Philipi Hall. Two posters also were set afire inside the building.

McCausland reported that the dorm houses about 200 students. No one was injured.
