Firewood fundraiser ?to benefit teen
Doherty’s North Freeport General Store is selling tickets for the second annual firewood raffle to benefit Alexandra Daniel, a Freeport teenager with epilepsy.
Daniel, 17, was diagnosed at the age of 9, and is on a large dose of medications to control her seizures. The raffle prize is one cord of firewood delivered to the winner’s home. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The firewood will be on display at the North Freeport General Store until the drawing on Nov. 23. Tickets are available at the store, or by calling Becky and James Daniel at 865-0645.
Zoning ordinance public hearings
The Freeport Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. in the Freeport Town Hall Council Chambers to discuss two possible amendments to the Freeport zoning ordinance. The first proposed amendment is to allow smaller lot sizes in the Village 1, Village Commercial 2 and 3 districts.
The second proposed amendment would expand the definition of agricultural farm stand.
The public is welcome to attend. Submitted materials are available for viewing in the Freeport Town Planner’s office.
Freeport Lioness-Lions annual craft fair ?and luncheon
The Freeport Lioness-Lions Club is hosting its 15th-annual craft fair and “fish chowdah and chili luncheon” on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Harraseeket Grange Hall on Elm Street in Freeport.
The lunch runs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with homemade fish chowder, chili, steamed hot dogs, homemade pies, soda and water.
The craft fair features fresh balsam wreaths, jewelry, hand knit items, homemade cards and ornaments, stained glass and photography. Free coffee is available for shoppers. There will be a raffle with many items donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting any Freeport Lioness-Lion Club member and ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Great Osprey 10K, Nov. 3
The 31st annual Great Osprey 10K Ocean Run will take place Saturday Nov. 3, at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Freeport. The race begins at 10 a.m., with race-day registration 8:30-9:30 a.m. Entry fees are $20 (no shirt) or $25 (includes shirt), with an additional $5 for race-day registration. Prizes are awarded to the top finishers in various age categories. All race proceeds benefit the RSU 5 Recreation and Community Education Program Scholarship Fund. The race will be held rain or shine.
If the race is canceled due to extreme weather conditions, refunds will not be issued. Parking is limited so arrive early. Online registration and a course map are available at www.rsu5-rce.org .
Financial seminar
A seminar entitled: “Staying Calm when the Market Goes Wild” will be hosted by Caleb Stephens and the Freeport Edward Jones office at the Freeport Community Library on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. Jim Ignaizo, associate director of MFS Mutual Funds will be the guest speaker. Freeport High School class fundraisers
Students at Freeport High School are selling items to the public to raise funds for their individual classes. Items are available at the polls on Election Day or students can be contacted individually through Nov. 7, with the exception of the class of 2013, whose members are selling a variety of citrus fruit from Golden Harvest in Florida until Nov. 26.
The class of 2014 is selling a variety of wreaths from Down on the Farm in Danforth; the class of 2015 is selling a variety of poinsettias from Longfellow Greenhouses in Manchester; and the class of 2016 is selling pies from Judy’s Kitchen in Durham.

Recreational shellfish licenses available
The town of Freeport is accepting applications for recreational shellfish licenses, which are now open for non-residents. Licenses can be purchased at the town clerk’s office during regular business hours on a first-come, first-served basis. Residential recreational licenses are $16, non-residential recreational licenses are $27 and a three-day recreational license is $20.
Election info
Freeport polls will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in the gymnasium at the Freeport High School at 30 Holbrook St. for the general and municipal election. Absentee ballots are available now through Thursday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. The five ways to request an absentee ballot are in person, electronically, by mail, immediate family member or by a third-person application.

Library news and notes
The U.S. Air Force Colonial Brass will be giving a free concert on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. The ensemble of six professional musicians from the U.S. Air Force Band of Liberty will be playing a variety of music from classics to pop and Broadway to swing in the Community Meeting Room. Seating will be limited. Audiences are advised to arrive early.
The seventh grade students at Freeport Middle School recently spent some time at the Schoodic Education Adventure Program at Acadia National Park.? With access to forest, wetland and shoreline ecosystems, students engaged in hands-on natural and cultural study at New England’s only national park. ?The two-night, three-day program included ranger-led programs in geology, tide pools, soil science and mapping. ?According to the students, the night hike, the clear starry nights, marine chemistry and the food were among the best parts of the adventure.Send questions/comments to the editors.
