Enrollment down slightly

Gorham school enrollment in October is listed at 2,699, down from 2,702 in June, according to figures released earlier this month by School Committee Chairman James Hager.

October figures report Gorham High School enrollment at 848 students, which is unchanged from June enrollment. The number of kindergarten students is 170, down from 182 in June.

Grades showing increases are the third grade, which rose from 210 to 228; fifth grade is up from 186 to 223; eighth grade increased from 208 to 223; 11th grade up from 205 to 215; and the 12th grade increased from 203 to 204. Other grades showed enrollment decreases.

Dyer Galleries hosting reception

Isaac Dyer Galleries, 180 Fort Hill Road (Route 114), Gorham, is gearing up for its fifth year with an opening reception featuring artists, from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

University of Southern Maine art alumnus Judy O’Donnell and painter and printmaker Ed McCartan will attend. O’Donnell is a painter and sculptor and is also featuring new works in wax. McCartan, of upstate New York, lives in Brunswick. His work was featured this month on the cover of the Union of Maine Visual Artists newsletter.

Genealogy group ?to meet

Paul Doucette of Gorham said that the Greater Portland Genealogical Chapter will hold its monthly meeting on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 29 Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a social time.

The program will be member stories (including one about a grandfather that took part in the California gold rush) and a question and answer time for Genealogical Brick Walls will begin at 1 p.m. A business meeting will follow at 2 p.m. For more information, call Doucette at 839-2593.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Oct. 18 that the U.S. public debt was $16,198,174,452,215.24.

A small grass fire was quickly extinguished late Monday afternoon on Fort Hill Road in Gorham. Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said Tuesday a passing truck had pulled down a low hanging wire that ignited vegetation.
