There are 15 days left before the election, but the battle for control of the Maine Legislature has already broken a record in outside spending.
The most recent expenditures by groups spending on legislative races is well over $1.75 million, a figure that surpasses the state record of $1.5 million spent in 2010. The most intense spending on mailers and other political ads is still ahead.
The outside group spending is separate from candidate spending. Essentially, it includes activity by party committees and political action committees.
The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices tracks independent spending. The Press Herald has compiled a searchable database and a target map for state Senate races built from this information. We’re updating our database with the most recent expenditures, which arrive multiple times every weekday.
The Press Herald data shows expenditures up through record No. 91. As of this post, the expenditures had just hit No. 100.
