School employees earn citizenship

Two longtime employees of Maine School Administrative District 6 recently became American citizens.

Executive secretary Hedy Smith and accounts payable specialist Martine Nugent took the oath in a ceremony in the office of the school district’s superintendent where they work. Immigration officers Cindy Lembarra and Kurt Pelletier awarded them their citizenship certificates following the oath ceremony.

They were honored by fellow employees, friends, and family.

In a prepared statement, Smith said, “The day was especially memorable because I was not alone in repeating the oath. Martine Nugent, a fellow Canadian, stood beside me in the ceremony. My first order of business as a U. S. citizen is to register to vote. It will be the first time I have ever voted in my life,” Smith said.
