FRYEBURG — Paid attendance for this year’s Fryeburg Fair was down by about 17,000 people from last year’s fair.

Fryeburg Fair spokeswoman Rachel Andrews Damon said weather played a huge role in the dropoff from 160,836 in 2011 to 143,741 this year.

It rained three days out of a possible eight fair days, Damon said. The fair ran from Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 7. Damon said it rained Sunday, Sept. 30, as well as Wednesday and Thursday.

“I think people live and die by weather.com,” Damon said.

But for those bold enough to challenge the forecasters, their decision to attend the fair on the final two days really paid off.

The rain held off on Saturday and Sunday, despite forecasts to the contrary, providing fairgoers with a brisk but relatively dry experience.

On Friday, the Fryeburg Fair set a new daily attendance record, according to Damon.
