Ryan Martin, a physical therapist from West Baldwin, has a knack of picking winners in the online Press Herald high school football picks contest.
He has won three of the five weeks this season.
Martin has a record of 164-26 heading into Week 6. He’s eight ahead of the second-place contender, and has won three $50 gift certificates. Asked how he has been so successful, the 29-year-old Martin said he doesn’t have any secret formula other than keeping close tabs on high school football.
“I follow the newspapers’ sports section and see how the teams are doing and who might be injured,” said Martin.
“Mountain Valley had one of their top players injured at the start of the season. I figured they would get better with him back as the season went along. Cony has had success throwing the ball. I thought they would have a good chance against Brunswick. I was a little concerned when it rained last Friday night.”
Martin said this is the first year he’s played the contest but he’s not new to picking games. He and his father, Scott, have had a yearly contest picking high school football games. What are the stakes? Every fall the loser has to buy two tickets to the state championship games at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
“I have a pretty good lead this year,” said Martin, whose comment might just fire up his dad.
Martin played basketball and baseball at Mt. Abram High in Strong, and graduated from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
