GORHAM – Gorham police at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 arrested Michael W. Newton, 47, of Gorham on four counts of gross sexual assault, class C felony. He was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
Detective Sgt. Dana Thompson of Gorham Police Department said in a report that the female victim was less than 14 years old at the time of the sexual abuse, which was reported to police on Sept. 27. According to Thompson’s report, the “alleged sexual abuse was reported to have occurred many times throughout the summer of 2012.”
The Department of Health and Human Services received a referral about the alleged sexual abuse, which initiated the criminal investigation, police said.
Detective Lawrence Maxfield-Fearon and Thompson arrested Newton at his home on Ash Drive in Gorham. Gorham police are continuing the investigation.
