CUMBERLAND β A sulky driver was in critical condition Monday night after he fell out of his seat and landed on the racetrack at the Cumberland Fairgrounds.
Mike Timmons, President of the Cumberland County Fair, said the driver, 65-year-old Leigh Fitch of Sebago, appeared to have suffered some type of medical issue before falling out of his seat.
Fitch was transported to Maine Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition by a nursing supervisor.
Timmons said Fitch, who was competing in the fourth race of the night, was rounding the track with several other harness racers when he keeled over and fell on the track.
The accident took place just seconds before horses were going to be released from the starting gate.
βIt happened so quick. It was very unsettling,β Timmons said.
Timmons said Fitch is a veteran driver, having raced since he was 15 years of age.
