BATH — Charmaine A. Hanna passed away at her home in Bath on Saturday, September 8, at the age of 80, after a long illness. She was born on January 24, 1932, in Old Town, Maine, to Camille and Elizabeth (Parent) Dionne.
She spoke lovingly of her parents and growing up in Old Town. They moved to Bath, where she graduated from Morse High School, Class of 1950.
She met her future husband Thomas L. Hanna in 1949, and they were married the following year. Her husband joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, and made the navy his career. They enjoyed traveling for the Navy and were stationed at Norfolk, Virginia and Newport, Rhode Island where he was an instructor at the Naval War College. They moved back to Maine in 1965 to raise their family. During the times he was out to sea, she dedicated herself to taking care of her family. She volunteered her time as a Den Mother for the local Cub Scout Troop. She was a professional seamstress, and also made beautiful clothing for her entire family. She was a member of the Bath Women’s Softball Team called “The Bath Tubs.” She worked at Auerbach Shoe as a supervisor for several years during the early 1970’s. She sponsored a child in Africa for many years and loved to hear how he was doing through his teacher’s correspondence.
After her husband Thom passed away in 2008, she spent her remaining years living with her son Tom and daughter in-law Brenda, who gave her the best of care. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Rose Hanna.
Char is survived by her brother Ronald Dionne of Houston, Texas, and her sister Patricia Hayward of Augusta. Two sons, Thomas R. Hanna and his wife, Brenda, of Bath; Lyndon Hanna and his wife Theresa, of Woolwich; granddaughter, Camellia Hanna; her son Tom’s step-children David and Paul Lessard, and Chenoa Denney, and her great-grandchildren, Taylor and Connor, and many nieces and nephews!
A graveside service will be held next month in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Bath Maine. A notice announcing the date and time will be published soon.
