She spent her childhood in Washington, Arizona, and California; graduating from Citrus Union High School in Glendora, CA. She attended Citrus Jr. College, the University of Oregon Eugene, and San Jose State University in San Jose, California. She received a BA in education in 1963 from San Jose State, married Samuel Lee Hawkes in the summer of 1963 and together they had two children, Erika and Neil. Nancy moved with her husband to Brunswick in 1979 following years living abroad in
London, Singapore, and Brussels.
She was elected to the Brunswick School Board and served for three terms. She also founded The Kitchen Connection, a kitchen design center located in Fort Andros. Before she retired in 2005 she spent a year teaching English to Chinese students in Hong Kong.
She is survived by her daughter, Erika, a stable manager in MA, her son Neil, a pilot and Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, and three grandchildren; Joshua, Caleb, and Emma Hawkes.
