FREEPORT — Figures of Speech Theatre, a puppetry theater company located at 77 Durham Road, is seeking high school students from Brunswick to Portland to join The Figures of Speech Student Ensemble this fall.
A news release describes the production as follows:
Now in its fifth year, The FOSSE pairs top-quality professional artist mentors with high school students to create original adaptations of classic tales using FST’s signature blend of puppets, masks, shadows, music, actors, dance and more. The FOSSE is gearing up to create a filmed, puppetry adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” this year.
Director Ian Bannon has pulled together major funding including grants from the Maine Arts Commission and Maine Community Foundation to support the $34,000 budget for “Frankenstein.” Students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the artist mentors, taking the reins from day one as The FOSSE creates this film from scratch.
FST has partnered with the Maine Learning Technology Initiative to broadcast the finished approximately 45 minute film to every interested middle and high school classroom in Maine, followed by a live chat forum between the audience and student artists.
The FOSSE is actively recruiting high school students to join the ensemble. Students writers, builders, artists, musicians, actors, dancers, movie buffs, photographers, techies, thinkers and doers are encouraged to join.
There is no audition process, but The FOSSE requires its ensemble members to fully commit to the project as well as read and discuss Shelley’s novel before attending rehearsals.
