HARPSWELL — Harpswell Community Theater is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with the production of “An Evening of ’40s Radio,” directed by Chris Hall.
Performances are today and Saturday both at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Centennial Hall, Route 123, in Harpswell Center.
A news release describes the production as follows:
The setting is a 1947 radio station. Announcers, actors, singers and stage crew get together to broadcast episodes of “The Lone Ranger”(complete with gunshots and galloping horses) and “Fibber McGee and Molly,” and comedy routines by Burns and Allen, and Abbott and Costello.
Our local Andrews Sisters (Regina Roy, Nancy White and Shirley Bernier) bring to life some melodies from the ’40s such as “Rum and Coca-Cola” and “Swinging on a Star.” And of course, there will be the inevitable commercials — 1940s style.
Will the Lone Ranger (Ken Wiley) and Tonto (Mike Doyle) be able to rescue Anne Maynard (Sandra Golonka) from unscrupulous Chet Mason (Al Martorelli)? Will Fibber McGee (Tom Vurgason) ever get that broken window fixed? Can anyone find anything at all in Gracie Allen’s (Shirley Bernier) filing system? And, will Lou Costello (Linda Hall) ever figure out who’s on first? Other cast members include Anne Anderson, Millie Ackley and Eleanor Grafe.
