He was born in Newport News, Virginia, on November 18, 1982, the son of Joseph and Annette L. Haas. He was the youngest of three children. David relocated with his family to Brunswick in 1987. He attended Jordan Acres Elementary School and Brunswick Junior High School. David graduated from Brunswick High School in June of 2001. He was President of his senior class. David won an Army ROTC scholarship which allowed him to attend the University of Richmond in Virginia. He graduated with a degree in History in 2005 and accepted a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. David was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. He deployed with the Division to Iraq where he served as a Truck Platoon Leader. During his second deployment to Iraq David served as a Maintenance Company Commander once again with the 1st Infantry Division. He returned to Fort Riley in 2009.
He graduated from the U.S. Army Logistics School, Fort Lee, Virginia, in 2011 and deployed to Daegu, South Korea in November 2011. He was due to return home in November 2012. David was known for his infectious laugh, his beaming smile, and his ability to bring out the best in family and friends. Capt. Haas was a good Officer and Commander who put the completion of the Mission and the welfare of his troops at the top of his list of priorities.
David loved public service and was planning to become a high school counselor or teacher when his military career was completed. He is survived by his paternal grandmother Ruth C. Haas of Willingboro, New Jersey; his parents Joe and Annette Haas of Brunswick; his brother Marc Haas of Richmond, Maine; his sister Kirsten Haas of Greenville, South Carolina; and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is also survived by a nephew (William) and two nieces (Christina and Isabella) of Richmond, Maine.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Brunswick High School Gymnasium on Saturday August 4th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 132 Mckeen St.,Brunswick at 9:30 am on Monday August 6th with interment with full military honors to follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
