BRUNSWICK — The second annual Maine BBQ Chicken Dinner is set for Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brunswick United Methodist Church, 320 Church Road.

Tickets may be purchased at the door. Children cost $4.50 and adults eat for $7.50. Take-outs are also available.

This annual event is cosponsored by the Bath and Brunswick United Methodist churches. Last year the barbecue raised more than $1,400 for the United Methodist Economic Ministry in Western Maine. For the past few years both churches have increased their support for this ministry in response to the increasing number of people who are facing extreme hardship right here in Maine.

When someone purchases a barbecue ticket, they are joining with the churches to help address the overwhelming issues of poverty in the western mountain region, one of the poorest areas economically in northern New England, according to a news release from organizers.

“Who doesn’t love the smell and taste of a Maine barbecue in the summer … complete with all the fixin’s, barbecue chicken, potato salad, homemade bread, baked beans and Maine blueberry pie?” asks the release.

There are several ways to help the residents of western Maine:

— Buy a ticket and enjoy some barbecue with friends.

— Make a cash donation to the United Methodist Economic Ministry, mail it to the Brunswick United Methodist Church, 320 Church Road, Brunswick, ME 04011, Attention Dan Dolan; email daniel.dolan@usnwc.edu or call 319-5305.

— Volunteer to join the Bath-Brunswick UMC Fall Mission to UMEM. For more information contact Irving or Brenda Ouellette at irvbren@gmail.com or 729-3089; or call the Bath UMC at 443-4707.

UMEM, located in Salem Township, supports several outreach and service ministries including: housing repair, maintenance and improvement; nutritional and basic food services; clothing exchange; home heating-fuel assistance; personal growth and development opportunities; youth services; financial support; and community outreach.

The Economic Ministry struggles to maintain a ministry with low overhead and high service and output.
