DURHAM — Irene M. Knowles, 84, resident of Leighton Road in Durham died Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Freeport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Freeport following a long illness. She was born December 17, 1927 in Randolph, VT a daughter of Learmont S. and Delia I. (Prentiss) Smith. She was educated in Vermont and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, VT with the Class of 1946.
On April 24, 1949 she married Gilbert E. Knowles, Jr. in Newmarket, NH. Gilbert predeceased her on March 5, 1991.
She was a longtime member of the Brunswick Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Irene had many interests and hobbies, such as reading, knitting, crocheting and crafts.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
Survivors include three sons, Ernest P. Knowles of Greer, SC, Douglas L. Knowles of Colorado Springs, CO, Andrew K. Knowles of Durham, ME, two daughters, Mildred O. McMahon of Stoneham, MA and LuAnn P. Hirata of Berrian Springs, MI, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A graveside committal service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 in the East Wales Cemetery, East Road, Wales, ME. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, July 20, 2012 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 214 Topsham Fair Mall Road, Topsham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene M. Knowles’ memory to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church building fund, PO Box 294, Topsham, ME 04086. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
