FREEPORT — John Herbert Card, 78, of Bowdoin, passed away unexpectedly, on Sunday June 3, 2012. He was born in Bowdoin on March 3, 1934, a son of the late Edward and Mary (Huston) Card.

He attended local schools before enlisting in the Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was married to Pauline Chase and together they worked and raised their young family in the Bowdoin area until her death in 1994.

He worked as a mechanic for the Maine Department of Transportation for over 22 years before retiring. He then worked at Winslow Park in Freeport for over 5 years.

He was very active in the Audubon Society and loved sightseeing for birds, designing and building birdhouses for The Blue Bird Association. He could always be found feeding the squirrels in the park and he was affectionately known as “The Muffin Man” to the girls at the credit union for always bringing them fresh warm muffins. He loved stock car racing and was an avid NASCAR fan.

John is survived by 2 children: Kathy Mercer and her husband Jack of Kittery and Paul Card of Bowdoin, his grandchildren: Christopher and Ryan Nason, Melissa, Jessica and Sabrina, his greatgrandchildren: Cassy and Janelle, his brothers: Ernie, Roger, Gilbert and Edwards Card Jr., his loving companion of many years, Janice Fournier, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Pauline (Chase) Card, and two brothers: Winston and Robert Card.
