WISCASSET — Erwin Maurice Skillin, 85, died Monday, June 4, 2012 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

He was born in Woolwich on August 24, 1926, a son of Eugene Maurice and Vera Iris (Bearce) Skillin. He attended Woolwich schools. He entered the United States Army serving two tours. He received the World War II Victory medal where he served in the infantry division in Seckhenhe , Germany. Erwin’s second tour was with the 82nd Airborne Division. During his military career he received the Parachutist Badge, the SS Carbine 30 Cal andtheM1badge. OnJune 16, 1950 he married Pearl Erskine. He was employed at Bath Iron Works as a shipfitter, retiring after 45 years. For the past five years he resided at the Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was a member of the Wiscasset American Legion, the Wiscasset Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites Lodge and the 763 Chapter of the 40/8.

Erwin enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl J. Skillin of Wiscasset, one son, Dale E. Skillin of Wiscasset, two daughters, Linda Lewis and her husband Peter of Rhode Island and Penney Skillin and companion Darren Soule of Wiscasset, three brothers, Myron Skillin and his wife Alma of Woolwich, Orman Skillin and his wife Barbara of Whitefield and Ed Skillin and his wife Pat of Phippsburg, two sisters, Grace Smith of Woolwich and Ethelyn Read and her husband Reginald of Phippsburg, four grandchildren, Jessica Morris and her husband Sean, Janelle Skillin and her companion Matt Barter, Melissa Whitely and her husband Dana and Courtney Cheng and her husband Tim, five great grandchildren, Joshua Morris, Sienna Morris, Tyler Whitely, Jacob Whitely and a new one on the way, many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Elwin Skillin and Breese Skillin, two sisters, Dorothea Rice and Gertrude Brawn and special uncle, Merton Bearce.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Funeral Home. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Wiscasset American Legion Hall. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta at 10 AM on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion, Post 54, 25 Fort Hill Street, Wiscasset, 04578.
