BATH — John Gerard Lebel, 85, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2012, with his family present at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

He was born on March 4, 1927, the son of the late Peter and Josephine Lebel of Bath, the last of nine brothers and sisters. Our father served in the army during the Korean War in Italy, and the time he was stationed there was the source of many stories that revealed the pride he has taken in serving his country.

He worked all of his life as a welder both at Hardings and at BIW, a trade he both enjoyed and excelled at, until his retirement in 1989.

On October 11, 1952, he married Margery Perkins of Dresden, the start of sixty happy years of marriage.

Our dad was a natural storyteller and a great cook. Through his retirement he especially enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Citizens. Another of his wonderful gifts to his family was spending summers with them at their cottage at Damariscotta. What we loved most about our father was his kindness, his unconditional love for our mother, his children and our large extended family. He was forgiving, honest, full of good humor and led the most joyous of lives. He was also a patient teacher and a model husband and father, always generous with his time, and he shared all these wonderful qualities equally with everyone.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gary Lebel, and his wife Andrea of Cumming, Georgia, a daughter, Cindy Levesque, and her husband Norman of Winter Park, Florida, and a daughter, Terri Baker, and her husband Clyde of Woolwich, six grandchildren, Christopher, Renee, Luke, Liza and her husband Nicholas, Justin, and Ashley, and three great-grandchildren, Nora Grace, Tobin, and Enoch. He was and shall forever remain the brightest light in our lives.

Visitation will be at the Desmond Funeral Home in Bath between 12 and 2 PM on Thursday, May 31, with the service at 2. Please join us in a potluck reception at the American Legion in Bath following the committal. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.
