AUGUSTA — Four more groups will apply to open charter schools in Maine, bringing the total to nine.
The deadline was Wednesday for potential charter school operators to give the Maine Charter School Commission notice of their intent to submit full applications later this summer.
The four additional proposed schools are:
— Fiddlehead Art & Science School, an elementary school in Gray.
— John Jenkins Leadership Academy, an online program for junior high and high school.
— Maine Connections Academy, a virtual K-12 school managed by Maryland-based Connections Education.
— Rural Aspirations Project, a high school in Monroe.
Rural Aspirations Project plans to launch their school in September 2013, but they are submitting materials now because they plan to apply for a federal grant next month to support planning and implementation. The other groups hope to start classes this fall.
Notices of intent filed before Wednesday included proposals for primary schools in Cornville and Monson, a science and technology high school in Portland, another K-12 virtual school and a conversion of the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences to a charter school.
