BATH — The Reverend Dr. James Albert Purington, 77, resident of Bath, ME died Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Winship Green in Bath.

He was born June 17, 1934 in Brunswick, ME a son of Clarence Merrill and Albert Fae (Harmon) Purington. He attended Pleasant Street School, Hawthorne School and graduated from Brunswick High School with the Class of 1952.

Mr. Purington received his B.A. Degree in Divinity from Providence Barrington Bible College in 1956, his M.D. I. d. from Gordon – Conwell Theological Seminary in 1959 and his D.M. I. n. from Drew University in 1980.

He served as a minister in various churches in various states including Maine, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and most recently in Carthage, NY before retiring to come home to Maine. Mr. Purington had served on the Editorial Board of the Christian Civic League of Maine.

He was a very talented woodworker, he enjoyed making model boats, airplanes and trucks both from scratch design and from kits and had made two remote control boat models that he enjoyed sailing in the water near his cottage in West Bath. He also enjoyed making grandfather clocks. His handcrafting made not only the outer cabinet of the clock but one model included all of the wooden clockworks made by hand. Another of his woodworking talents was making violins, he took great pleasure in listening to music played from his instruments and he had also made a child sized version. He was predeceased by his brother William Purington who died in 2011.

Survivors include his wife of over 52 years, Clara (Wentworth) Purington; a son, Jonathan C. and his wife Jackie Purington; two daughters, Kathleen A. Purington, Mary Anne and her husband Chris Mooradian, a sister, Audrey Taylor and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Brunswick, Church Road, Brunswick with Reverend Randy Kelloway officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Brunswick.
