Plimouth in Plymouth

Last weekend, Cub Scout Pack 800 traveled to Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts to experience a Wampanoag overnight, and the boys had a fabulous time. Along with their families, the Scouts were able to explore the recreation of Plimouth Plantation as it appeared in 1627.

The town is populated by costumed role-players taking on the lives of real inhabitants who are more than willing to discuss virtually any aspect of colonial life. Goats, sheep, and cows are pastured within the stockade, while chickens roam freely about the village. Time could also be spent at the home site of Habbamock, a Wampanoag who was sent to the colony by Ousamequin to keep track of the new inhabitants, where native Americans wearing traditional garb were available to talk with about the home site.

In the evening, the Scouts were served a Wampanoag meal consisting of venison soup, turkey, summer squash, naussamp (a porridge with strawberries, raspberries and blueberries), and hot sassafras tea. Evening activities included making clay pots and playing Hubbub, a native game. After breakfast, the Scouts were able to explore the plantation more or take a short trip into modern Plymouth to see the Mayflower II. More role-players were available to answer questions as crew or passengers. The Scouts’ admissions were paid by proceeds from the annual fall popcorn sale, enabling virtually the entire pack to make the trip. Pack 800 would like to thank the community for their continued support of this traditional fundraiser making trips like this possible.

Price Is Right night

I love the unique flavor of all the different fundraisers held in the schools and community organizations. So often we get to participate, be entertained, play a game, run a race, and just have fun while we are actually helping groups raise money. Next week, there will be a rather new fundraiser that is sure to be fun. Everyone is invited to “come on down” and pick up your tickets to the Price Is Right night to be held at Windham High School, a fundraiser for the Class of 2014. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. This event will happen on Friday, May 18, at 6:30 pm. There will be over 40 raffle items available and the concession stand will be open throughout the evening. Please contact either Karen Petcher or Jennifer Viel at the high school at 892-1810 for more information.
