CAPE ELIZABETH — Police said an Internet relationship that turned violent has led to several charges against a South Portland man.

Jose L. Pinto-Zarate, 30, of 696 Westbrook St., was charged with unlawful sexual contact, criminal restraint and assault Sunday morning, April 29.

Clerks at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland said Pinto-Zarate was released on $2,500 cash bail the same day. He is scheduled to appear at the Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland at 8:30 a.m. June 12.

Police Capt. Brent Sinclair said Pinto-Zarate allegedly assaulted a 37-year-old woman on Saturday, April 28. The investigation determined it was someone he met on a social networking site.

Sinclair said the woman arrived at the police station early Sunday morning to file the complaint. After South Portland police officers determined Pinto-Zarate was at home, he was arrested by Cape Elizabeth Sgt. Kevin Kennedy.

The police investigation showed Zarate and his alleged victim had been in contact for a couple of weeks before meeting for the first time on April 28, Sinclair said.
