The state spent $10.7 million on medical services for more than 7,700 Mainers who were no longer eligible to receive state Medicaid, Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said today.

The numbers were released following weeks of intensive analysis by DHHS, the state controller and state information technology officials. It’s likely that the state will have to pay back $3.8 million to the federal government because of the mistaken payments. The state will not be able to recover state funds paid out to providers, Mayhew said.

The problems occurred because of computer issues at the department, and even though Mayhew was aware of the problem in January, she said she did not know the full scope of the problem until recently.

The Appropriations Committee is now getting an explanation of how the mistake will affect budget needs moving forward.
