A fire on the evening of April 19 destroyed a home owned by Marge and Robert Healing at 41 West Marginal Way on Mere Point in Brunswick. Members of the community wrote to express their appreciation to those who prevented the fire from causing more damage.
Life-saving expertise

On the evening of Thursday, April 19, the Brunswick Fire Department demonstrated their impressive capabilities as our neighbors’ house on Mere Point suffered a catastrophic loss.
The department responded to a reported “garage fire” and upon their arrival at the scene, the fire had spread to the house, as well as our garage next door.
Chief Ken Brilliant confidently managed the scene, which included more than 80 personnel from at least nine fire departments. As a result, the fire was contained to the two structures and did not spread to the nearby woods and houses.
Without their expertise and quick action, the results would have been much different.
We are fortunate to have such a competent fire department in our hometown. Thank you,

Heartfelt thanks
To the editor:
This is an open letter to the Brunswick Fire Department.
On behalf of the homeowners’ association at the end of Mere Point, I write to express our heartfelt thanks for the spectacular performance of your department and the neighboring mutual aid fire companies of Topsham, Freeport, West Bath, Bath, Phippsburg, Lisbon, Harpswell, Cundy’s Harbor and Durham that assisted in containing the terrible fire that destroyed our neighbors’ home on West Marginal Road last Thursday night.
We appreciate the challenges you encountered in fighting a large, fast-burning fire at a remote location far from any viable water source.
We are immensely grateful that no residents or firefighters suffered any injury and that you were able to keep the fire from engulfing the neighboring houses and woods.

Heroic response
To the editor:
We would like to recognize the expertise, response and very hard work of the Brunswick Fire Department and all other fire departments who responded to the fire at Mere Point on Thursday, April 19.
We are property owners in that area and followed the sequence of events closely. But for the skills of the many firemen, the fire could have spread and made for a most dangerous situation.
The continued support of the fire department, its equipment and trained personnel is underlined by the event last week. Many thanks and much gratitude to all who are our heroes for responding to that fire.
