Lynch’s piece, “Monolith,” will be displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capitol for a year, according to a release issued today by U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat who represents Maine’s 1st district.
Lynch and other winners — one from every participating congressional district in the country — will be flown to Washington to participate in an opening ceremony in June.
“It was another strong year for competition entries in visually capturing many aspects of Maine life,” Pingree said in the release. “Patrick’s nighttime photo of a Bath Iron Works crane brings an air of mystery to something many of us drive by frequently. He’s made us give that everyday object a closer look and a deeper appreciation. Congratulations to him, the runners-up, and everyone else who participated this year for their very talented work.”
Competition jurors called Lynch’s image “a unique narrative of place that is able to tell a true story of Maine. The beautiful lighting and carefully chosen compositional balance invoke a wonderful sense of mystery. It’s a great example of how recognizing the opportunity of the right moment can build incredible drama from the mundane.”
Runners-up in the 1st District this year are Julianna Fischer of Wells, Veronica Jones of Readfield, and Hillia Aho of Waldoboro.
Winners and runners-up will be honored at a Blaine House reception in May.
