BOWDOINHAM — With scrap metal thefts still plaguing businesses, residents and police alike, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department charged a Turner couple with theft Tuesday for their alleged roles in a metal heist last month.

Chief Deputy Brett Strout said that at 2:01 p.m. on March 29, Deputy Matt Sharpe was called to River Road in Bowdoinham to investigate a neighbor’s report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the door yard of a residence.

When he got there, Sharpe found two people loading items into the back of a Ford pickup truck and a flatbed trailer. He later identified the duo as 36-year-old Shane Lecasse and 26-year-old Deanna Lecasse, both of 45 Round Pond Road in Turner. Strout said both list scrap metal collector as their occupation.

Sharpe took the Lecasses’ names, photographed the metal they had loaded and listened to their explanation for why they were there. Strout said the estimated value of property they’d loaded was in excess of $600.

Sharpe had the couple unload everything because “their stories weren’t matching,” and he determined they didn’t have a valid reason for being at the property, Strout said. At that point, Sharpe was unable to confirm who owned the property so he let the Lecasses go.

Through further investigation Sharpe determined Shane and Deanna Lecasse did not have permission to take the items they were in the process of loading. On Tuesday morning, he summonsed both for burglary and criminal trespass.

“Deputy Matt Sharpe spent quite a bit of time and effort on that and has done a good job putting everything together,” Strout said Wednesday.
