LISBON — Local firefighers have been busy responding to fire calls in the dry weather conditions.
Lisbon Fire Department was called to a Moody Road woods fire at around 5 p.m. Tuesday. Fire Chief Sean Galipeau said this morning that an approximately 50-foot area of the woods burned, but he said the department forestry unit reached the fire easily and extinguished it quickly.
Galipeau said children playing with matches ignited the fire. “I can’t stress enough for parents to make sure that their juveniles don’t have any ignition sources on them in this dry weather,” he said.
The department’s forestry unit also squelched an unrelated fire Monday at around 4 p.m. That blaze burned approximately 300 square feet along the tree line bordering the ball park in the area of the old landfill on Pinewoods Road.
The fire, which did not damage the ball fields, is considered suspicious and remains under investigation, according to Galipeau.
“We’re awaiting further information as to the particulars,” Galipeau said.
At around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the fire department was called to 19 Lisbon St. for a reported electrical stove fire. Galipeau said when the homeowner went to pull the fuse, he suffered an electrical shock, but wasn’t seriously hurt and didn’t require transport to a hospital. The fire was out when firefighters arrived, but crews investigated the incident and made sure the fire hadn’t spread into any other parts of the house.
To date, the Lisbon Fire Department has responded to 94 calls in 2012, Galipeau said.
Topsham
Topsham Fire Department crews responded to a woods fire at 10:19 p.m. Tuesday behind 20 Bickford Drive, in the same area firefighters responded to twice on April 5 for a similar blaze located behind Woodside Elementary School.
Capt. Greg Payson said the fire Tuesday was larger than the April 5 blaze, affecting an approximately 150-foot-by-50 area. Payson said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes, but crews were on scene for about 90 minutes to extinguish hot spots.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, so Payson couldn’t say if it is connected to the April 5 incident.
