PORTLAND (AP) — Tourists and residents looking for a fun and environmentally friendly way to get around downtown Portland and the Old Port neighborhood will have a new option this summer.

A fleet of eight bicycle taxis, called pedicabs, is scheduled to be roaming the city. The rides offered by Maine Pedicab are going to be free.

Company manager Nate Hamburger tells The Portland Press Herald that drivers will be working for tips only. He says the tips-only model works out well, because people have such a good time that they tip generously.

Maine Pedicab is part of a larger company known as USA Pedicab, which started in Boston in 2005 and now serves several cities. The cabs carry two passengers.
