AUGUSTA (AP) — Nobody can remember when a lineitem veto was issued — if ever — by a Maine governor.
So legislative leaders are trying to figure out how to deal with Gov. Paul LePage’s vetoes of two items in the state budget bill. The line-item vetoes were issued Saturday.
Leaders of both parties in the House and Senate are polling their members to see if there’s sufficient interest in coming back to Augusta to take up the governor’s vetoes. An answer could come as early as today.
Then, leaders will have to decide when to come back, but it would likely be this week.
Lawmakers last week recessed until May 15, when they’ll return to complete business for the year. But the lineitem vetoes may bring them back sooner than expected.
