THEATER PROJECT Technical and Lighting Director JP Gagnon poses with a new LED lighting fixture.

BRUNSWICK — The Theater Project recently replaced one of its three incandescent based lighting systems with energy-efficient LED theatrical lights.

According to Technical and Lighting Director JP Gagnon, 10 new LED “Par” fixtures have replaced 14 Fresnels, seven Color Scrollers and two spotlights.

The scrollers — a device that changes the plastic “gel” that colors the light — were getting worn and starting to make a lot of noise, which can be a challenge during productions, according to a Theater Project release.

The 30-year-old Fresnels “were still working fine,” Gagnon said in the release, “but they were used so heavily that they were the bulk of the power usage for our stage lighting.”

The new LED lights draw a tenth as much power as the old lights, from 500 watts down to 50 watts per fixture. They can create virtually any color of light needed for a show without the need for costly lighting gels, and they give off less heat, which will help keep air conditioning costs down in the summer season, the release states.

To help offset the cost of the switch, the Theater Project sold the Fresnels to another small community and professional theater in the Mid-coast region.

To mark its 40th season, the Theater Project is in the midst of a $100,000 Legacy Fund campaign. An anonymous donor will match $100,000 in contributions.
