He was born January 27, 1932 in Newark, NJ the only child of Harold Vliet and Irma (Geissinger) Nungesser.
John attended schools in Millburn, NJ and graduated from Millburn High School with the Class of 1950. He received his Bachelors degree from Bowdoin College graduating in 1954. He was President of he Fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon. Following graduation John enlisted in the US Navy where he served his country proudly. John later pursued a degree in dentistry and studied at the University of Pennsylvania receiving a D.M.D. Degree in 1959.
Dr. Nungesser ran a dental practice for more than 30 years in Far Hills and Bernardsville, New Jersey while residing in Mendham, NJ. John then retired and moved to Maine over twenty years ago. He remained active in dentistry, helping out at local practices in the Brunswick area.
John loved being in the outdoors, whether it be trap or skeet shooting, horseback riding, long walks with the dogs and playing tennis. He also had a talent for music and singing. John was an active supporter of Bowdoin College over the years and a proud member of the Meddiebempster’s musical group at the college.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Blair Nungesser Gabriel who died in January of 2012.
Survivors include his daughter Dana and her husband Eric Macy of New Vernon, NJ and, Blair’s husband Tom Gabriel and five grandchildren, Eric, Brooke, Hunter, Jordan and Payton.
Services will be held at St. John On The Mountain, 379 Mount Harmony Rd., Bernardsville, NJ at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Meddiebempster’s at Bowdoin College, Office of Development, 4100 College Station, Brunswick, ME 04011-8432 in Dr. John Vliet Nungesser’s memory. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
