BIDDEFORD — The city is negotiating with the owner of the trash incinerator in its downtown to buy the plant for $7.5 million, Casella Waste Systems announced today.
The plan also calls for the construction of a new solid waste transfer station in Westbrook, the sale of the state-owned Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town and a new curbside recycling program in Biddeford, according to a press release from Vermont-based Casella, owner of the Maine Energy Recovery Co. incinerator.
The incinerator, in operation in Biddeford since 1986, has been blamed for impeding development in that city and neighboring Saco because it emits a foul odor, among other reasons.
Previous plans to shut down the incinerator, a longtime goal of Biddeford and Saco officials, have fallen through.
